A Profile of Services, Documentation and Holdings
 

Reference Library of UNIC Dhaka is a vital source of information on the work of the United Nations.  It provides information on the UN through data, documents, newsletters, pamphlets, posters, books, audio-visual tapes and films.  It contains the Official Records of the major organs of the United Nations and basic holdings of some of the UN bodies and Specialized Agencies.   The Library collection is updated constantly with current UN documentation, produced by the substantive departments of the UN Secretariat and e-mailed and pouched weekly from the Headquarters.

It’s a well-organized library with easy access for the public and has space for visitors to work in.  However, it can be used by the general public for reference purposes only.

In particular, the following are the major resources of the library: 

Resolutions, reports, documents of General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice (ICJ)

  • Annual Reports of the Secretary-General of the UN;

  • United Nations Treaty series volumes;

  • Reports of the Major UN conferences;

  • UN Yearbooks; Statistical Yearbooks; Demographic Yearbooks; Yearbook of Industrial Statistics, Yearbook of International Trade Statistics and Yearbooks of United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL);

  • UN Monthly Bulletin of Statistics such as National Account Statistics;

  • Major publications of the UN including those relating to Peace-Keeping Operations, Women and Human Rights;

  • Major UN Reports including Human Developments Report, World Investment Report, ESCAP Economic and Social Survey Report, Least Developed Countries Report and Reports of the International Law Commission;

  • Major publications of UN bodies and agencies including UNDP, FAO, WHO, ILO, IMF, UNHCR, UNAIDS and UNESCO;

  • UN publications for general readers, such as Basic Facts About the United Nations;

  • Newsletters (in Bangla) and Bangla translations of UN books, documents, pamphlets and posters published by the UNIC Dhaka;                     

  • Various electronic services such as Optical Disc System (ODS) which has online access to UN Headquarters to retrieve UN documents as well as UNBIS Plus on CD Rom;

  • Video films/documentaries on the UN and its activities;

In addition to assisting and guiding interested readers, the Librarian also maintains a mailing list for the purpose of distributing and disseminating reading materials free of any charge.

Anybody can request the Officer-in-Charge of UNIC or the Reference Librarian for inclusion of his/her name or institution in the mailing list.  Specific reading materials (other than reference materials) may also be supplied on request.  Video films can be borrowed by an institution on written application addressed to the Officer-in-Charge.
