The
United Nations Information Centre in Dhaka is a public resource facility
for the dissemination of current data about the multi-faceted
activities of the United Nations in Bangladesh.
At the heart of the facility there is a Reference Library of United
Nations Documentation.
As a part of a world-wide network of over 70 Information Centres (UNICs)
and Services, UNIC Dhaka, which was established in 1981:

Promotes
an informed understanding of the aims and activities of the United
Nations among the people of Bangladesh. To this end it supplies
up-to-date information materials on the World Body in political,
economic, social and humanitarian fields to local and national
administration, mass media, scholars, non-governmental organizations,
parliamentarians, students, libraries and the public at large.

Serves
as the local channel for exchanging information about the United
Nations.

Maintains
productive working relationship with mass media, professional bodies,
government information services, NGOs and educational institutions.

Highlights
UN activities through various functions including press conferences,
seminars and exhibitions.

Translates
UN documents and reading materials into local language (Bangla) and
publishes monthly newsletters.

Launches
the most important annual reports of the UN system (such as Human
Development Report, World Investment Report, ESCAP Economic and Social
Survey Report, LDC Report etc).

Supports,
when necessary, the public information efforts of UNDP, other UN
bodies and Specialized Agencies and Programmes and coordinates the
organization of the UN family’s public events.

Encourages
government departments, NGOs and educational institutions to celebrate
designated UN observances.

Covers
a wide range of promotional and information services including press
briefings, publications, audio-visual aids and library facilities.

Submits
reports to the Headquarters about publicity of UN news through local
mass media.

Plans,
prepares programmes and co-ordinates information activities related to
priority issues and special events of the UN in consultation with the
departments and offices concerned;

Performs,
when necessary, protocol functions for visiting UN
dignitaries.
